I'd really like to put my name forward for a 100 franchise as a 'non-playing player':
One or more men's Test players may be appointed as a 'non-playing player' for The Hundred, seemingly at the ECB's discretion. They will be used in promotional material, but will not train or play.
Excellent opportunities for Reece Topley, Tymal Mills and Matt Coles?
-
Strewth. Utter twaddle.
-
'Non-playing player' is as much a contradiction as using the words 'The Hundred' and 'cricket' in the same sentence.
Lynda
-
I thought that the idea of a non playing player was someone who was mainly involved with coaching and management, not going around meeting and greeting.
I could do that for a free hot dinner.

Good to see humour is alive & well!!

I have just read a good line on the Grockles Forum. "You are now forbidden to call next year 2020. It will be known as the year 100."
-
In this fast moving new format I note, that during play, the coach can go out to the middle and talk to his team. Very odd.
-
I see The Hundred is now in trouble over sponsorship by sugary snacks.
It was all going so well; you can see why Yorkshire are in bother if Graves is applying his management skills to this.
-
Apparently Morgan has said '18 Counties going for a length of time doesn't really make sense', that's because it is a League, if he feels that way then why does he ever bother turning out for Middlesex at all? What a complete waste of space he is, but what do you expect from an ECB mouthpiece who only has his own interests at heart & doesn't care about the wider game, who also should only be playing for Ireland.
-
Captain Morgan would bring his own hood to a KKK meeting if he thought it would give him a contract.

I set em up, you out em away...!
-
The selection is now live on Sky, what a complete load of utter tosh, I find the monetary value element somewhat distasteful - surely players could have been seeded instead.
-
I'm still available. I could qualify under the 'useless tw@t' pay band. Oh, and I see Tymal and Reece have been picked up...
-
When is the spectator draft? I'm wondering how much money I'd need to be offered to go to a match ...

Don't worry I am sure they will be giving tickets away. All you'll need to do is dress up as a schoolboy or housewife and demonstrate no knowledge of cricket.

I'd need enough money to cover my expenses and the waste of a day so a free ticket won't be enough. I'm female so obviously can't possibly know anything about cricket ::)

You've still surely got a chance to be picked up as a Wild Card spectator next summer!
-
I had it on the gogglebox and it was as comprehensible as a Japanese gameshow sans slime and subtitles. Seems a commerically led marketing effort promoting cricket reflecting the sponsors airy processed fast food reconstituted snackettes.
Meanwhile in the real cricket world as an example of what is commonly befalling from an established Essex cricket club to our local league:
"...please accept this email as confirmation that our cricket club will not be participating in any of the competitions for 2020. It was hoped that by entering the 2019 T20 competition it would allow us to continue our membership of the league going forward but in common with a lot of other clubs who play recreational cricket, the player participation interest in turning out (even for the reduced overs and elapsed time spent playing) was extremely poor and we struggled to get teams of players out on the pitch whether it was a midweek or a Sunday fixture.
This has left us with no choice but to regretfully withdraw from the T20 competition and on behalf of my club, I wish the league and all the participants good luck for the 2020 season."
This is even after ECB spent thousands of pounds without any consultation or research on Last Man Stands artificial pitches in a completely unsuitable location a couple of miles nearby.
-

I certainly would be 'wild' if I had to watch that rubbish ;D
-
Amazing how money talks as they all gushed forth about how exciting it would all be, if there was no T20 then maybe it would but how can you have any allegiance to any team, particularly Leics who have nobody at all, we have 2 in Wales & 1 in London, big deal!
Apparently if I read Cricinfo correctly it may take 5 years for the concept to break even, what if it doesn't?
These teams selected yesterday, how long are they operative for? Is there an annual draft or does this last for a few years?
So many questions unanswered, doubtless many more will arise in due course.
-
Am I correct in thinking that the Welsh team contains no Welshmen?
-

Reminds me of that Saturday Night Live sketch with confused American tourist Rory Templeton's experiences of a Japanese game show...

I have not got Sky and did not watch the daft, sorry draft.
I bet it had the usual random ex player or celebrity who says how great it is. Then shortly afterwards says I have done what it says in my contract, can I have the money now please.
Despite how much they big it up. It is a competition with plastic teams, players who are only in it for the money. Spectators who when you are watching think I am glad they are in the ground and off the street.
The games will have as much relevance as an afternoon Greyhound race at Monmore.
-
These teams selected yesterday, how long are they operative for? Is there an annual draft or does this last for a few years?
next year teams can retain up to a maximum of 10 of the 15 players with another draft.
-
Nasser was the first pundit to realilze EVERY player pick was being described has fantastic, great and the best since sliced bread in this white ball fill your pockets format.
Never heard any mention of the unavailability of Kholi, Ashwin , Dhoni and Co from the draft .
-
Now Root is saying that this competition will help England retain the World Cup. They are insulting our intelligence. Just take the money and keep your mouths shut.
-
From an Essex POV the big worry about the draft was despite the ECB’s “reassurances”, if you played for a Test Match Ground your chances of getting picked increased hugely. Trent Rockets signed virtually the entire Notts team whilst Manchester signed rubbish like Dane Vilas up for 125k. Believe me this will have been noticed by our undrafted players. Perhaps when it comes to contract renewal time the likes of Jamie Porter and Sam Cook will think “I want a slice of this money” and little old Essex lose our best players. We heard the rumours of Birmingham allegedly trying to “poach” Dan Lawrence, I suspect it won’t be the first time that happens.

I 'd agree with much of what you have said but I don't think Vilas is 'rubbish' as you put it, he's a fine all forms player & a decent Capt especially when his error helped us win the QF!

To see Messrs Harrison and Graves fumbling around before the House of Commons committee investigating cricket (and read the Cricinfo report) it's worth having a look at https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/_/id/27911397/mps-grill-ecb-chiefs-budget-hundred-amid-growing-costs.
Neither of these gents would make it past the first round of The Apprentice.

...and it's also worth reading George Dobell's written evidence to the committee on http://data.parliament.uk/writtenevidence/committeeevidence.svc/evidencedocument/digital-culture-media-and-sport-committee/the-future-of-english-cricket/written/106274.pdf.
(Thanks to the Somerset Grockles for this link). If MPs can spare some time from Brexit they ought to summon GD and give him the chance to air his views on TV.
-
Thanks Postman. It's looking like quite a mistake that the county CEOs didn't back a two division T20 format as advocated by Mr Nash. That makes sense to me and you could have had a draft of centrally funded overseas stars for the top division to give it some glitz. You could have even stolen Rugby league's million pound game concept for one of the promotion/relegation places between the two divisions and have the top four playing off in a finals day for the super league title.
In sport big stadiums, to my mind aren't everything. Even in football you get clubs with small grounds in the big time, often a tight little ground with partisan crowds making for a lively atmosphere. A bit like Chelmsford! Get that on free to air TV and you've got excitement, some big stars and a good geographical spread of fixtures so if youngsters saw it there might be a game on not too far away.

Strange how George Dobell can see clearly all these problems but the ECB clearly can't! No not really GD has intelligence & the ability to see all sides of the problem ECB are blinkered & dogmatic.
-
Having read the Dobell article, the course of events looks like this. ECB get a load of money by selling out to Sky for cricket coverage and taking it off most people's TV screens. They then realise that interest in cricket is waning, so they spend all the money they got in setting up a new cricket competition to try and bring people back.
Please see the title of this thread.

A thought occurred to me in that as the County T20 Group stage precedes the 100 does that affect the O/S players signed to Counties ie Zampa to us for example - will they be able to/want to turn out for their Counties thus risking injuries or not?
I'm guessing some will not wish to risk jeopardising their fat salaries from the 100 & if so will devalue the domestic T20 unless Counties sign lesser known players. Also I can't see us getting Amir next year given Pakistan tour here in the second half of Summer.
So thanks again ECB for devaluing our T20 at a time when it is thriving virtually everywhere.

Excellent, thoughtful evidence. I was also struck by Graves somewhat unfortunate body language at the Parliamentary committee in the earlier clip, where he was jabbing his pen at his questioner. An aggressive and in pother circumstances intimidating gesture.

I thought that but then I thought that maybe it would in reverse. If there's no other competitions going on it might be better for them to come over for the T20 and then to stay for the hundred, a bit like they stayed on from the World Cup this year.

To add to the madhouse theory. Wisden Cricketer mentioned the Abu Dhabi T10 which is even snappier than T20. That T10 is a format that follows the same laws of the game and is recognisable as cricket, unlike the 100.
After all 10 over matches was the accepted format years ago when a Gillette cup or Sunday league game was badly affected by the weather.
The T10 has been on Freesports Channel 64. It appears that no TV deal was in place so any channel could show it if they wished to.
Ravi Bopara was playing for the runners up.

It was on Sky Sports as well. I can’t imagine the rights would have been too expensive.

So this abomination starts next week. If you are against this tournament, I implore you not to watch it. I know you'll be tempted to flick it on your TV, well don't do it and give Sky and/or BBC an extra viewer that they will use in their final viewing figures to try and peddle how successful the competition was come the end of it.
Don't watch it and don't post about it on social media either. Silence and non interest is the only thing worse than criticism online, because at least with criticism people are still talking about it, which means others will want to know what the fuss is about.
Make no mistake, if this tournament succeeds it marks the official beginning of the end for county cricket as the top level domestic standard in English cricket and the beginning of the end of every non test match county as a full-time outfit. Very sad times ahead.
-
Sorry but what's happening in the cricket world next week?! RL Cup is the big/only event for me.
-
Don't worry Alex there is no chance I will be "tempted" to watch. If it had been T10 I would have accepted it but another format is just not necessary.
-
Same here, Alex, no chance we shall be watching the 16.4, just keeping an eye on the 50-over scorecards on our computers. Will be good if we hear that one of 'our' lads has done something special in it, otherwise no interest at all. As the saying goes, it's just not cricket.

You are all missing the point. The ECB do not want the likes of contributers on here at the Hundred. It is to get a whole new audience. Where from is anybodys guess.
-
The article yesterday on Cricinfo suggested that they thought we'd all accept it in the end:
https://www.espncricinfo.com/story/the-hundred-2021-tom-harrison-defends-hundred-disruption-believes-reluctant-fans-will-find-a-place-for-it-1269829
I can think of a place.
Lynda
-
I notice that the ECB are not giving the figure of how many tickets have been sold or just given away free. Now that the likes of Debenhams have closed down there are plenty of Mannequins they could put in the seats to make the grounds appear full.
-
Just giving this a bump on the 16.4's D-Day. I repeat, as tempting as I'm sure it will be to turn the TV over to Sky or BBC 2 over the next month or so, please don't do it. The less viewers it gets, the more unimpressed the broadcasters become and the more likely this gets consigned to the bin in future.
-
I will be having a look at BBC2 tonight. The same as driving past the scene of a nasty accident and not being able to stop having a quick peek.

I thought the whole point of this farce was that it was aired on terrestrial TV?
-
Whatever the real figures it will be trumpeted as a great success. I find it sickening how the pundits are crawling all over it for another hefty payday. They have no loyalty to cricket just their bank balances.

Just to demonstrate how interested we are in this rubbish, the following conversation took place here this morning:
Steve: Do you know which teams our lads are playing for?
Lynda: Not a clue.

They are interviewing fans who look as though they would attend a Surrey game at Oval. I wonder how many will turn up for a 2nd visit.
A lot of people are leaving it late to turn up, unless they are out of view elsewhere in the ground. The Oval looks at most 25% full, explain that ECB the evidence is on everyone's TV screen.

That's a big crowd for a womens domestic match. A lot of tickets have been given away though I think.

Get rid of the forced fun and disinterested celebrities and stick to the game and it would not be too bad.

My daughter works for Investec in the City and 200 complimentary tickets were dropped in last week, there were still over a 100 sitting at reception last night.
Says a lot for the competition and how many actually brought tickets for last nights event?

It was not the response they were after!

Being BOFs, we still use the BBC's text service on the TV, so were surprised to find nothing about the 16.4 on the Cricket pages - no headlines, no scorecards. Then we realised that the system they use to display the scorecards might not be configured to handle the 16.4, but that doesn't explain the lack of headlines. Rummaged about in the other sport sections, nothing, but did find the tables for both the men's and women's competition on the Tables section of the Cricket pages. Odd, seeing that the Beeb are showing the competition.

Lynda if you care to glance at the BBC Cricket webpage it is dominated by the 16.4, celebrating what a success it already is. >:(

I looked at the results table too - anyone understand why the losing team has the higher run rate according to teletext?
-
There is now a headline on the Cricket section of BBC text saying that the viewing figures for last night's 16.4 match broke records!
If you read the item, the record it broke was the highest viewing audience ever for a women's cricket match shown on the BBC. I didn't know they'd shown any before this.

The T20 international at Chelmsford v India was shown on the BBC last week. I quite enjoyed it. Given the new county live streams combined with changes in their boxing coverage, which Slogger junior watched I got rid of Sky Sports last month. It didn't seem great value.
-
Watched it tonight.
Not much to say other than Tymal Mills impressed as commentator.
Extremely personable & good at explaining the game to a new audience.
Vaughan was terrible as usual.

I wonder how some would feel if there was a franchise team based at Chelmsford.? Listening to the inane prattling of Kevan James yesterday he seemed to be quite a cheer leader for the Southampton franchise. Nick Gledhill read out an e mail pointing out that many people live no where near these venues but he didn't react.

Slogger the 16.4 is not cricket no matter where it is scheduled and T20 is already doing the job they think [if indeed any thinking has really taken place] this new rubbish will achieve. I even prefer T10 to this - waving white cards to indicate the end of '5s' - how juvenile.
Even the version children start playing like Ken Barrington [4 overs each pair with runs deducted for wickets] is close enough to the real game to be understood.
-
Having watched the highlights of the last England T20 international, I remarked that I'm finding the wickets are the most interesting part of the game these days. Watching people slogging fours and sixes is becoming boring.

"Following the successful launch of the Hundred competition the ECB want to go further to enhance the appeal of this competition. So we want to do away with bats and wickets which only get in the way of crowd enjoyment. We'll replace the stumps with goalposts. We'll also replace the small, hard to see white ball with a bigger, softer ball. The 'cricket' name is an impediment to attracting new supporters so we are going to change the name of the sport to ...football. Finally, team names are a bit confusing so we will using names that are more familiar with the target audience, like ... Manchester United, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Aston Villa."

Well I'm no fan of this tournament and I haven't watched a minute of it. My point, not terribly well put is will supporters at counties hosting these franchises be more supportive?
Counties like Essex, Northants and Kent never will host such a team. Somerset's main issue seems to be no west country team, rather than an objection to the concept. If Cardiff flops I suspect the ECB will move that franchise to Somerset very quickly.

They'll go to Bristol over Somerset and name the franchise Bristol Bulldogs or some rubbish like that. As for the counties support, yes I think the host members will be won over. You can tell that Oval Invincibles have worked hard to draw Surrey fans in with their identical shirt colours and Surrey players. Plus they don't have a city name so it's not like someone from Lancashire who has to support a team called Manchester.
Obviously as you say Essex will never host their own franchise due to Chelmsford being far too small and far too crap, but in a different world if we were for whatever reason awarded a franchise in future, I suspect an Essex franchise wearing Claret and Blue would comfortably sell out Chelmsford and then some.
Another point that infuriates me about this competition is how the host counties get to keep a huge slice of ticket sales/beer money etc, whilst the counties who also own a stake in the sides get nothing. For example, the MCC will be coining it in following their four sell out games at Lord's whilst Essex and Middlesex get zilch. The chief execs of non host counties all need a good slap round the head for signing off on that without negotiating a percentage of the profits for themselves. The rich get richer and the Essex's of this country get poorer.

So they were raving about an 18,000 crowd at the Oval ( with many having free tickets) but failed to mention a T/20 Surrey v Essex often attracts 27,000 paying customers.

It's an old marketing/PR trick. Once you have sold all the tickets you can, you "give" away all the remaining tickets and you can claim the event is "a sell out". When challenged you advise the seats are empty are because people didn't turn up!! ECB can then claim how successful it's been.

I think watching a couple of games so far. Traditionalist need to ask questions on how we are going to attract youngsters into the old formats of the game?Essex like other counties really need to market a fun day out for families.

A very good point. I stopped going to T20s at Chelmsford as my then primary school aged son didn't like the drunkeness. Chelmsford isn't great for families, but we had several happy family days at Colchester and even Garon Park! Space for the lads to play.

I don't blame them. You might have curbed your behaviour until you got home.

Well he started it by mixing scotch with his pop!

Weekend fixtures were fairly civilised I recall.
Weekdays were definitely a mare though.

Yes. We went a few times on a Sunday, which was fine, but then went on a Saturday tea time and although it never threatened to get violent there was no hope of watching the game. That was in 2011 and I didn't do another home T20 until the Sussex game this year. I have done the odd game when we played at Lords or The Oval, but as I no longer work in London I doubt I'll do that again, especially if these live streams continue.

But it wouldn’t be Essex unless there was a fight breaking out with the wives/boyfriends trying to stop it by pointing out that “it ain’t worth it my dear”.
-
The worst match I attended was a 40 overs at Portsmouth - only time I was concerned being in a crowd as a lone female.
-
Again, it's another black mark towards the ground and the capacity. Only 6k allowed in means that the club are unable to accommodate both the drunks and the families. It has to be one or the other and unfortunately, the drunks spend far more money both to attend and also inside the ground getting leathered, so the club prioritises them with the night games.
If we had a capacity of say 10-12k, we could market our games for both, with separate sections for each and a dedicated decent sized family stand. I go to T20 at Lancs and they have it perfect because OT is so big. They have a monster party stand for all the drunks, stands for the cricket lovers and stands for the families. I can't remember ever seeing any trouble even at the Roses match.
-
Alex to be fair the atmosphere at Old Trafford is not half way what it is at Chelmsford.
-
When anyone said they would wish to be my guest at the Cricket. If the first question was what time does the Bar open? No invitation would be forthcoming.

Sounds like you have already made a visit or two!

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2021/jul/30/pom-bears-popchips-and-hula-hoops-why-the-hundred-is-so-hard-to-digest
Matthew Engel article:
an excerpt: "At least the products advertised on the shirts are based on reality, spreading some good cheer as well as obesity and unrecyclable waste. The team names are just random word connections confected by the ECB marketing department to link their random players. But I enjoyed finding out what a Pom-Bear is and was sorry the budget did not stretch to bribing God to retime the Mancunian rain and save Wednesday’s encounter between the McCoys and the Popchips. I did catch Thursday’s game at Lord’s when Tyrrells entertained Skips: trust MCC to grab the upmarket brand."
-
The cash strapped ECB are wasting even more money by doubling the salaries of the players for the hundred. A desperate attempt to tempt some star names to prop up their abysmal competition.
-
yep they'll throw the kitchen sink at it. We need to stand firm and continue to boycott it. All of it.
-
Well, we didn't take any notice of it last year. We didn't see any, either live or on TV, or even bother with the scores, and intend to do the same in 2022.

Any notice of what? ;D

More like a nightmare ...

Even one of it's arch supporters, Eoin Morgan, recently said T10 is the future. When will the ECB realise no one wants another format? If it was so good, it would have been copied elsewhere by now.
-
T10 unlike the Hundred is a recognised format.
10 overs is what was played from the start of One Day Cricket to resolve a weather affected game.

Mrs SLU and I watched it. That’s what (almost) lockdown does for you!
Then we watched the t20 World Cup. Give me the latter any day.
