With two OS players allowed in the T20, will we be bringing in anyone else???Explosive Top Order Batter or a opening bowler maybe??? We have some good seamers but T20 wise they are very green.
-
Can Wagner be persuaded to stay for T20? We need a bowler & that would help, I'm surprised we've never tried to get Southee again as he did fairly well last time, Middx may well have struck lucky this year.

We can do much better than Wagner. Batsmen win T20 matches.
-
With the possibility Amir will be missing due to the Pakistan tour to Bangladesh, I hope we have sounded him out about staying.
I do not know the financial ins and outs if we could afford a second OS player for the T20. Top of the order is a worry, Chopra and ???. Browne is not the answer. But then looking at the pace bowling we have
Wagner/Amir
Porter - yet to play a T20
Beard - as above
Walter - Still young
Dixon - Still work in progress
Quinn - barring the OS bowler, our most experienced paceman and going all over the park at the moment
For the Batsman, a few options
Guptill - Would love him but cant see it happening, too much money
Johnson Charles - I know some will say I am mad, but in T20 he is a dangerous opener. Will fail in some and come off in others. Prob quite cheap
Chris Lynn
Lendal Simmons - Like Charles above
For the paceman
Have Wagner and Amir
Coulter Nile - Prob too much
Ben Cutting
Shannon Gabriel
Mclenaghan
Anyway, just a bit of fun
-
According to media in Bangladesh we've made an offer to Tamim Iqbal after his Champions Trophy performances. That would be a smart bit of business. He shouldn't be that expensive and we could do with a good opener.
-
I would be happy with that. I do wonder who will give us the explosive start up top.
-
Tamim Iqbal would be good & if he comes off will get quick runs to get us going.
-
We definitely need another signing. I think T20 is our weakest suit this year as some of our shining lights in the other formats, I'm thinking Porter, Lawrence, Browne, are are not so strong in this format.
-
At least the club recognises the need for another good batsman in this format. If Tamim turns us down I'd take a punt on Fakhar Zaman. Looked impressive under pressure in the Champions Trophy and has T20 experience from the PSL. Would be cheap and probably jump at the chance. Of course if we had a bottomless pit of money like $urrey then I'd be going all out for Guptill but that's life.
-
Just realised, this is only a week away now. Leaving it a bit late, aren't we?
-
I think JJ Smuts wouldn't be a bad shout, looked decent against England. cheap too
-
alji has mentioned in the other thread but Essex Twitter have said they will be announcing someone soon..
-
Iqbal confirmed

Iqbal confirmed
Some real news
Excellent. A good signing
An improvement on nat talking to himself and VP living in the past - that's for sure!

No. The improvement is a sensible choice of O/S with a good established T20 record. The sort of player we never seemed to sign under the previous regime.
-
Bsmith does appear to have his sources, but there is nothing on the ECCC website or twitter about this. Bsmith could mean confirmed as not signing.

Indeed. Perhaps I should put more smilies on my post because it was said in jest
However, seriously. It is patently obvious that we are in a far better place (both as a club and a team) than we were before Paul Grayson left etc etc. Everyone knows it but, somehow, some folks still feel the need to draw attention to it time and again
What I (and I suspect others) find relatively tiresome is the need to dig out the old regime at every possible (and slender) opportunity. And (while I am aware that nat is trolling) the putting down of our players and some of our future players too. Sure, even though we are doing so well there are always ways we can get better but it would be nice if, when we are in a good place, we could be a little less sour
Perhaps it would be an idea to have a history part of the board where we could all reminisce about the good and the bad old days while leaving the rest of the forums for the current season.
Anyway that's my grumble over -I'll go back to comparing Mr Virdi's recent figures with Mr Harmer's. 8) 8) ;D ;D
And back on topic. Still reckon Tamim is a very good acquisition (assuming it is he)
-
he's been very much right previously, I'll say that.
lets hope so
-
Jumping the gun a bit.not confirmed anywhere?
-

Confirmed as signed. Just waiting for visa issues to go through.
-
Great.tjanks bsmith.hopefully will be sorted in time for friday

How long will Iqbal be here for ? Bangladesh are due to play Aus on the 27th Aug if it goes ahead.
He should be available for all the group games but would probably miss the Quarter Finals and Finals Day.

Worry about that if we get there.
Dwayne Bravo will probably be available. ;)
-
A decent acquisition who gets on with it, possibly a bit hit & miss but when he comes off he certainly does...
-
England players are normally made available for finals day so we'd have Cooky instead. People will say he's too slow but he scored 50 against Notts off around 30-35 balls. He's a class act and should play whatever the circumstances.

2015 T20 quarter final, Cook was available and not picked. Browne played, batted at 7 IIRC, you couldn't make it up...

Yep I remember that, another Grayson masterstroke!

Confirmed- as not in the squad for tomorrow announced this afternoon.

Always the odd clown on this forum who when presented with actual real news are very quick to jump down people's throats when it isn't instantly confirmed. As I mentioned, the delay is visa issues.
-
Bangladesh media saying he's only here for "8 or 9 games". Probably only going to be available for the first clump of games then going back before our game against Yorkshire. Worth keeping an eye on the Australia wages issue as well, tour of Bangladesh in August could be in trouble. EDIT: Updated article from the Dhaka Tribune http://www.dhakatribune.com/sport/cricket/2017/07/07/73102/ Odds on us introducing him to a pissed up Chelmsford tomorrow night? ;D
-
Glad to see Wheater in the squad. And Taylor and Dixon

Could be some unemployed Aussies floating around...after all, there's not as much call for bar staff in these days of austerity...
-
Honest opinions, is Iqbal much better than Ryder ?
-
Glad to see Wheater in the squad. And Taylor and Dixon
I agree about Wheater and Taylor but Dixon?!!....no, no...NO!!
-
Ironically after years of complaining that the club prioritises T20 over Chanpionship cricket we sit proudly atop Divison 1 and are fielding the weakest T20 team I can recall without a second quality overseas.
Ronnie out :)

I think he is trying to wind someone up.

Merely made a factual statement that he was not in the squad announced. If you read the whole thread you will see I acknowledged that you have sources, never said that your posts were not factual. Absolutely no need for the word that you used. Looking forward to your apology.

Now, now ;)
Although I trust Deep Throat/Bsmith's judgement.

In and out very quickly...

Shame, was looking forward to seeing him play.
Interesting to see what the club does now. 2 defeats from 2 but 12 games still to go. I reckon we will give Velani or Wheater a chance instead of signing a replacement.

Farce.
-
Nat,
Why is it a farce?
Do you know the facts of his departure?
-

If Lawrence was picked ahead of them in the first match then I'm not sure why he wouldn't be given the first opportunity.
-

Sees himself as being in the know & gets very touchy if his pronouncements are questioned.
Even in jest I recall.
-

Well I saw him stand at the non striker's end does that count?
As whistlestop tours go that's on a par with Dwayne Bravo.
-
Well, the final sentence of the statement is to me coded message for something really serious. Farcical situation I know, echoing an era of blithering incompetence that ended a couple of years ago, but I would remind everyone of my comment re unemployed Aussies...
-
Without knowing the reason for him leaving, I am not sure how the club can be at fault. If it is a personal emergency then short of a crystal ball what could we do??
-
I really do hope that this has nothing to do with any visa issues that appeared to be the reason why he wasn't here in time for the start of the competition.
Being a bit of a pessimist here but I'm just hoping that he was fully cleared to play against Kent. Otherwise we might be in the💩.

I don't think so. The way the statement was worded We wish him all the best and it would be appreciated if Tamim’s privacy is respected during this time. suggests it has nothing to do with that.

Agreed. The whole kerfuffle about his late arrival was presumably because the paperwork wasn't done in time - before the Kent match.
-
We can't really speculate as we don't know the facts & it isn't fair to judge something we don't know all about, let's hope whatever it is can be resolved for him satisfactorily. BTW he at least got more runs than Bravo albeit not a wicket!
-
Appears Iqbal was subject to a hate crime last night, in which someone attempted to throw acid over his wife.

Bl@@dy h@ll. Is this true? One of my students suffered this. I can't understand this.
-
Edited and removed my post now Tamim has officially denied the allegations. God I'm relieved to hear that!
-
Apparently, the attack story has been denied by Tamim on Twitter.
-
the star newspaper of Bangladesh ran with this story straight after he left a clue of days ago.
-
If it's in the Daily Mail it must be ...
-
This is fake news. Fortunately.
-
Where does it leave Essex financially? Will he be paid for all 8 games or will it be re-paid/wasn't paid upfront in the first place? Does anyone know?
-
He should only get paid one eighth of the contract, if he has withdrawn his services.
-
Re sign/ on loan Pettini as opener for T20...?
-
The obsession with having to have two overseas players for this is bewildering. The Bravo decision at the time was a disgrace and a craven waste of money as well as a kick in the teeth for those who got us to the final stages. In this instance ,good player that Tanim is, I would thought it marginal that he would have done much better than Wheater, Lawrence or even Browne. Worse still it denies home grown players the experience of playing in this format. We seem to be able to conjure up the cash at a drop of a hat to acquire expensive and risky - for whatever reason- overseas talent, for all forms of the game but of course forking out to hold a festival a la Derbyshire, Kent, Glamorgan and others is financially impossible. It's all about priorities I suppose.

It wasn't. Scott Styris had played in the group matches but had to leave on International duty and they signed Bravo as his replacement.
